And Now for a Word from our CSA

LEF Tomatoes from the Web Store
I’ve had a couple of readers ask me what a CSA is. The acronym stands for Community Supported Agriculture. The idea is that you “subscribe” to an organic farm and receive fresh veggies and fruits every week. The farm provides you with a “share” of whatever is ripe and ready for harvest, and of it’s fresher than organic produce in the store. Most folks (including yours truly) think it’s tastier too.

The CSA that I subscribe to is Live Earth Farms (LEF) in Corralitos, CA. Their season begins this week, and they still have a few “subscriptions” left.  As they put it, “Live Earth Farm is looking to strengthen our local food community by creating a network of like-minded supporters of sustainable agriculture and organic food.”

Along with your membership you get a weekly newsletter from Farmer Tom and CSA coordinator/recipe wizard Debbie, so you can be informed about what’s up in the fields as well as what’s in the share box and ideas for veggie preparation. You can access their database with hundreds and hundreds of recipes from years past. They also sponsor Farm events for the whole family and you-pick fruit days, as well as an internship program for organic farmers-in-training. They recently added a web store where you can select additional fruits and veggies along with your share. There are three options for share size.

Visit the LEF website at www.liveearthfarm.net to sign up or get more information. Or contact Debbie on the farm at 831-763-2448. She’s really busy this week, but will be happy to help you.

LEF Membership Includes:
  • Weekly deliveries of our fresh, delicious, seasonal, organic fruits and vegetables
  • Add extras to your share like pastured eggs and bread, or order through our new online Web Store
  • Three share sizes to choose from to fit every family size and budget
  • Weekly farm news and recipes - always ideas for using "what's in the box"
  • On-farm community events and workshops
  • Hands on farming and educational programs for all ages

After 3 years, I absolutely recommend membership. It seems that many shareholders agree; check out what others are saying about LEF on Yelp!:

I’m looking forward to another year of superb veggies, and to attending the u-pick events, the summer solstice party, herb workshops, and maybe even a farm sleep-over or preserve-making class. Perhaps I’ll see you there!
